Medical Advice of the Month

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS):

Introduction:

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complicated disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that fatigue may worsen with physical or mental activity, but doesn't improve with rest and can't be explained by any underlying medical condition. CFS is a state of chronic fatigue that exists without other explanation for six months or more and is accompanied by cognitive difficulties like problems with short-term memory or concentration. This disorder may also be referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS), chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS) etc. The real cause of CFS is unknown and might be triggered by a combination of factors varies from viral infection to psychological stress. Since there is no single test to confirm a diagnosis of CFS, a variety of medical tests to be ruled out other health problems that have similar symptoms. Conventional medicine is providing only a symptom relief treatment for CFS until the real cause is diagnosed. In Ayurveda medicine when CSF is not associated with a severe medical condition, can be managed with successful results through detoxification and purification therapy which restore the biological homeostasis.

Causes:

Causes include genetic factors, brain abnormalities, hyper-reactive immune system, viral or other infectious agents, psychiatric or emotional conditions. It is still not clear whether any chemical changes in brain or nervous system are causes of CFS, or merely findings in some patients. But some moderate-to-serious physical illness (such as a chronic viral infection) or emotional event may interact with certain neurologic and genetic abnormalities to trigger CFS.

Symptoms:

CSF has eight official symptoms include fatigue, loss of memory or concentration, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits, unexplained muscle pain, pain that moves from one joint to another without swelling or redness, headache of a new type, pattern or severity, disturbed sleep, extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise. CFS sufferers also will report cognitive difficulties, chronic, often severe, mental and physical exhaustion with additional symptoms including muscle weakness, increased sensitivity to light, sounds and smells, orthostatic intolerance, digestive disturbances, depression, and cardiac and respiratory problems. CFS occurs more often in women than men and is less prevalent among children and adolescents. This is a genuine threat to health and disrupts the quality of life, happiness and productivity. People with CFS are often unable to perform normally at work and home because of their long-term fatigue and problems with short-term memory. This can lead to depression, but depression is not a cause of CFS.

Management:

CFS needs to have an individualized treatment since there is no one specific treatment that works generally for all. Standard alternative treatment modalities in Ayurveda, such as herbal preparations, yoga, pranayama, meditation, dietary modification, relaxation, improvement of the sleep and life style may help to improve the symptoms. Some Ayurvedic medicinal herbs are proven to have an effect on to strengthen the body's immune system and generally regarded as a safe for long term therapies. It is advisable to avoid refined foods, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, saturated fats, dairy products, and gluten-containing grains. Eat more fresh vegetables, legumes, whole grains (non-gluten), protein, and essential fatty acids (found in nuts, seeds, and cold-water fish). Ayurvedic remedies focus mainly on metabolism and digestion to improve immunity by supplying nutrients to the cells thereby weakening the immune system. To improve the absorption of nutrients Ayurveda suggests drinking of warm water which facilitates dynamic life force to move through micro-channels. Specially gentle yoga stretching postures without tiring the body and breathing exercises are recommended for normalizing the circulation within brain vessels. Panchakarma, the Ayurvedic detoxification therapy is used to treat fatigue as it is highly effective in restoring the body to its normal balanced condition.
